DevOps Digest: 2026 DevOps Predictions – Part 2
Aaron Shilts, President and CEO of NetSPI, contributes a cautionary prediction about AI security risks in the 2026 DevOps predictions article. He warns that despite progress in AI guardrails, critical risks like the “human awareness gap,” prompt injection vulnerabilities, and agentic AI’s autonomous decision-making capabilities remain unharnessed and could lead to operational disruptions or security breaches. He emphasizes that organizations must prioritize safety over speed in 2026, implementing proper guardrails, governance, and accountability rather than rushing AI deployment. AI is at the center of innovation, but the reality is far more nuanced and immature than the market narrative suggests. Despite progress in model guardrails and governance, the most critical risks remain unharnessed: the “human awareness gap,” ease of model manipulation through prompt injection or data leakage, and lack of reliable behavioral predictability across contexts. Agentic AI amplifies the potential blast radius by making decisions and taking action autonomously. One flawed assumption, one unmonitored decision path, or one subtle manipulation can quickly escalate into operational disruption, security exposure, or financial loss. A key issue is that organizations want to build and deploy AI fast, but moving too quickly can come at the cost of security. In 2026, organizations must resist the urge to prioritize speed over safety. The best in the industry will be the ones who move fast with guardrails, governance, and proper accountability baked in.
